This ambitious project will transform the Semenic region into a modern tourist destination, featuring ski slopes, a cable car system, and artificial snow installations, along with summer recreational facilities such as zipline and adventure parks. Development works in the Semenic tourism zone have already begun. The project is being implemented by the Resita Municipality (project leader) in partnership with Valiug Municipality and the Caraș-Severin County Council. The announcement was made by Ioan Popa, Mayor of Resita, during a press conference on March 26, 2026, where the key components of the project were presented. The plan includes approximately 13 km of ski slopes (3 in total), a modern cable car system with 101 cabins, each seating 10 people and capable of transporting 2,400 passengers per hour, and an artificial snow production system. In addition, the project includes the construction of an artificial lake, supporting infrastructure, a road for buses transporting tourists to the lower station, a bridge over the Gozna River, and a garage for snow compacting machinery. Construction works are being carried out by national and international companies such as Dimex from Bistriţa and Supersnow from Poland, while technical supervision and expertise are provided by ArchiCO Engineering Company from Azerbaijan. Representatives of these companies attended the project’s launch ceremony in Resita. “Today we are starting works in Semenic, beginning with the installation of the artificial snow system. This system covers around 13 km, including three ski slopes, the 64,000 m³ lake, and its supply from the Gozna and Goznuta springs. We hope to put the artificial snow system into operation by November or December,” said Ioan Popa. The mayor emphasized that even if the cable car is not ready by the end of the year, tourists will be able to reach the resort using buses purchased with European funds by the municipality, which are expected to arrive by mid-summer. “Even if the cable car is not ready by the end of the year, Semenic will have artificial snow in the upcoming winter. In May–June, 14 buses will transport skiers to the mountain. This may not match the cable car’s capacity, but it allows us to test the resort’s operation and see that the dream we’ve had for the last 25–30 years is becoming a reality,” added the mayor. The ski slopes are already prepared for use, having been arranged by local authorities in previous years. At this stage, works will focus on technical infrastructure, and the terrain will be restored to its original condition afterward. “The ski slopes will not be altered. They were developed by Resita Municipality 3–4 years ago and are currently covered with grass. Only large channels will be installed along the sides of each slope. After the work is completed, the contractor must restore the terrain, reseed the grass, and reinstall the rainwater drainage system,” emphasized the mayor. One of the most critical parts of the project is the construction and installation of the cable car. Lighter, one of the world’s leading cable transport companies, requires financial guarantees to begin work. These funds are expected to come from either a loan or the Timiș County Council. “At today’s conference, Lighter was absent. Dimex and Supersnow have already had advanced discussions with them. They require financial guarantees before starting. Currently, we are exploring two options: a bank loan or the participation of Timiș County Council. More than 50% of the tourists expected in Semenic come from Timiș and Arad regions,” said Ioan Popa. The development of the Semenic tourism zone is not limited to winter tourism. Under the Regional Operational Program, financed by ADR Vest, additional facilities will include zipline, an adventure park, a pumptrack, and a special lift system. However, these activities are not part of the construction works starting today.
